Plants That Switch Their Roots

Some plants spend half their life growing in the sky and the other half rooted in the soil. These botanical chameleons can grow from the canopy down to the dirt or climb upward until they completely disconnect from the earth.

Primary hemiepiphytes start life as seeds high up in tree branches, only sending roots downward once they mature. Conversely, secondary hemiepiphytes begin their journey on the forest floor before climbing trees and eventually losing their ground connection entirely. This allows them to thrive in competitive environments where resources are scarce. It is a brilliant survival strategy that lets plants occupy multiple forest levels.
