Between 1987 and 1991, the Baltic states regained independence from the Soviet Union by singing. Hundreds of thousands of people gathered to perform forbidden national anthems, effectively using music to dismantle an empire.

During the Soviet occupation, cultural expression was suppressed and nationalist symbols were strictly banned. Residents of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania chose to fight back by organizing massive, peaceful choral demonstrations. Because their protests were rooted in culture rather than violence, they were incredibly difficult for authorities to suppress. This unique movement proved that collective peaceful action can be just as powerful as traditional military force.
