A Royal Wedding Cake Origin
The iconic pink-and-yellow check pattern of Battenberg cake was invented to honor a royal marriage. It celebrated the 1884 wedding of Queen Victoria’s granddaughter to Prince Louis of Battenberg.
This cake was designed as a sweet tribute to the four Battenberg princes, with each square of the sponge representing one of them. The vibrant colors are held together by jam and wrapped in a classic layer of marzipan. While its origins are tied to high society, it has become a staple of traditional British teatime. It remains one of the most visually distinctive cakes ever served at a formal event.
