You Do Not Know Your Own Mind

You believe you have a secret window into your own thoughts, but your brain is actually just guessing. We invent explanations for our actions after the fact, treating our own mental process like a mystery we are solving from the outside.

We assume our self-reflection is accurate, yet we easily dismiss others as biased or unaware of their true motives. In reality, our brains often construct logical-sounding stories to explain our choices after we have already made them. This means we are often just as clueless about our own inner workings as we are about the people around us. Recognizing this helps explain why we are so often blinded by our own internal narratives.
