The Missing Olympic Bronze Medal

For the first eight years of the modern Olympic Games, there was no bronze medal. Winners received silver for first place and copper for second, leaving third place completely unrewarded until 1904.

During the 1896 and 1900 Games, organizers used a very different hierarchy to celebrate athletes. It was not until the 1904 St. Louis Olympics that the now-standard gold, silver, and bronze format was officially established. This change reflected a shift toward the classic ranking system we recognize today. Interestingly, bronze remains the most popular metal for medals overall because of its durability and classic appearance.
