Why You Are Never The Same Person

In philosophy, you are not numerically identical to your younger self. While you may look and act similarly, your physical and mental composition shifts so fundamentally over time that you are technically a different entity.

Philosophers distinguish between being qualitatively similar to your past self and being numerically the same thing. Because your cells die and your personality evolves, you cannot be the same numerical object as the person you were at birth. This paradox forces us to question what actually links our past, present, and future selves together. It turns out that identity is more of a convenient social story than a permanent physical fact.
