The pleasant smell after rain has a scientific name called petrichor. It comes from a combination of plant oils and soil bacteria released into the air the moment raindrops hit the ground.

The word was actually invented by two scientists in the 1960s to describe this distinct earthy fragrance. They combined the Greek word for stone with ichor, which represents the golden fluid flowing through the veins of the gods. It is fascinating that such a common outdoor experience is literally described as the blood of ancient deities. This scent is strongest when a light rain follows a very dry spell.
