A Dutch researcher famously gained secret entry to Mecca by posing as a devout Muslim. He lived there for months, blending into the local culture to study Islamic traditions from the inside.

Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje became one of the few Westerners to enter the holy city during the nineteenth century. He even adopted a Muslim name and fully participated in daily religious life to win the trust of the community.
