The Fierce Weasels of the Sea
Despite their playful appearance, otters belong to the same family as aggressive predators like wolverines and badgers. These semiaquatic hunters are surprisingly distant relatives of the tough, land-dwelling weasel clan.
You might view otters as cute, fuzzy swimmers, but they share a lineage with some of the most tenacious hunters in the animal kingdom. Their relatives, the mustelids, are known for their incredible ferocity and strength relative to their size. Evolution took this predatory blueprint and adapted it for life in the water, resulting in the sleek, carnivorous creatures we see today. It is quite a contrast to picture them sharing a family tree with the scrappy, land-bound wolverine.
