Awareness ribbons are not regulated, meaning the same color can represent completely different causes depending on who is wearing it. Because many groups choose their own symbols, you might see the same shade standing for several unrelated issues.

There is no central authority or official dictionary for ribbon colors. As a result, a single ribbon color is often shared by multiple advocacy groups, leading to significant overlap. For example, a red ribbon is used to raise awareness for both HIV/AIDS and heart disease. This ambiguity makes it nearly impossible to identify a specific cause just by glancing at a colored pin.
