Samuel Johnson wrote one of history’s most influential dictionaries entirely by himself. Without a team of researchers, it took him nine years to define over 40,000 words.

Before this 1755 masterpiece, dictionaries were disorganized lists that lacked clear structure. Johnson single-handedly established the gold standard for English definitions and usage by including famous literary quotes.
