The Shapeshifting Giant Amoeba

Amoeba proteus is a giant, single-celled organism that lacks a fixed shape. Because it constantly changes its form to survive, it was historically confused with its equally massive cousin, Chaos.

This microscopic predator survives by constantly shifting its body into temporary limbs to engulf its prey. Its lack of a permanent structure makes it incredibly difficult to classify, leading scientists to occasionally group it with the genus Chaos. These organisms are surprisingly large, often reaching visible size to the human eye. Studying them provides a unique look at the fundamental building blocks of movement in nature.
