Art Designed to Destroy Itself

Auto-destructive art is a unique style where the masterpiece is intentionally programmed to disintegrate. Created in the wake of war, these works focus on the process of decay rather than a permanent object.

Gustav Metzger launched this movement in 1959 to reflect the chaotic destruction he witnessed during the Second World War. By using machines and chemical reactions, artists created displays that would slowly tear themselves apart. This challenged the traditional idea that art must be preserved forever in a museum. Instead, the final result was a fleeting moment of collapse that highlighted the vulnerability of modern society.
