The Underground King of Happy Hardcore

The Underground King of Happy Hardcore

Canadian DJ Chris Samojlenko sparked a massive rave movement with his Happy 2b Hardcore albums. He turned a niche, upbeat dance genre into a cultural phenomenon that defined the sound of North American warehouse parties.

During the late nineties, Samojlenko used the alias Anabolic Frolic to bring frantic, high-bpm electronic music to the masses. His mix CDs became legendary among fans for capturing the high-energy spirit of underground clubs. He also organized the Hullabaloo events in Toronto, which helped solidify the city as a major hub for the genre. It is rare for a single DJ to so effectively shape the identity of an entire subculture through both music and event production.
