On average, your friends actually have more friends than you do. This strange statistical reality occurs because people with large social circles are mathematically more likely to appear in your personal network.

This phenomenon is known as the friendship paradox. Because popular individuals show up in many different people's friend groups, they heavily skew the average upward. Conversely, you are rarely friends with the social recluses who have almost no connections at all. It is a classic case of sampling bias that makes everyone feel slightly less connected than their peers.
