The Droste effect creates a visual paradox where an image appears inside itself. This recursive pattern mimics a mirror placed before another mirror, theoretically creating an infinite loop that only stops when the picture runs out of pixels.

This hypnotic visual technique is formally known as mise en abyme, a French term meaning placed into the abyss. It rose to fame through a 1904 cocoa tin featuring a nurse carrying a tray with that exact same tin on it. While the human eye imagines the loop continuing forever, physical reality limits it to the resolution of the printed surface. Artists use this clever trick to challenge our sense of scale and spatial logic.
