Spider Silk Is Stronger Than Steel

Spider silk is pound for pound stronger than steel and tougher than Kevlar. This natural protein fiber is so versatile that spiders use it to trap prey, build protective cocoons, and even fly through the air.

Spiders can produce different types of silk depending on the job at hand, ranging from stretchy strands for catching insects to incredibly rigid lines for structure. Some species even use long threads to catch the wind and glide across vast distances in a process called ballooning. Despite its delicate appearance, this material is a masterpiece of biological engineering. Scientists are currently trying to replicate its durability for use in medicine and high-performance clothing.
