Why The Denver Nuggets Almost Failed

Before becoming an NBA powerhouse, the Denver Nuggets were known as the Rockets. They changed their name to avoid confusion with the Houston Rockets when preparing to join the NBA in 1974.

The team started in 1967 as the Denver Larks, but owners quickly rebranded them as the Rockets to match a local trucking company. When the team sought entry into the NBA, they realized two teams could not share the same name. They chose the nickname Nuggets to honor Denver’s colorful gold-rush history. This strategic switch helped cement their unique identity as they successfully transitioned from the ABA to the NBA.
