The Goats That Freeze In Terror

The Goats That Freeze In Terror

When these goats get startled or excited, their muscles lock up completely, causing them to stiffen and tip over. They do not actually faint, but instead remain fully conscious during their temporary paralysis.

This unique reaction is caused by a genetic condition called myotonia congenita, which delays muscle relaxation after a sudden movement. Despite their nickname, the goats stay wide awake while frozen and simply wait for their muscles to release tension. The condition is harmless to their health, though it certainly makes them look like they have suddenly lost their balance. It is a strange quirk of nature that turns a simple surprise into a full body freeze.
