Necropolis Means City of the Dead

The word necropolis is not just a fancy term for a graveyard. Derived from Ancient Greek, it literally translates to city of the dead and describes expansive, meticulously planned urban settlements built specifically for the deceased.

Unlike a standard cemetery that simply holds graves, a necropolis was designed with the same care as a living city. These sites often feature complex street layouts, ornate monuments, and grand architecture intended to be the permanent home for generations. Many ancient cultures built these cities outside their own boundaries to separate the world of the living from the resting place of their ancestors. Some are even carved directly into cliffsides, creating stone skylines that have stood for thousands of years.
