Before modern heating, people used a metal device resembling a frying pan filled with glowing embers to warm their icy bed sheets. This clever tool was slid under the covers to dry out damp linens and make sleeping through winter nights possible.

Living in cold European climates meant dealing with freezing, damp mattresses that could be quite uncomfortable. Families filled these pans with hot coals from the fireplace and moved them rhythmically between the sheets to distribute warmth without burning the fabric.
