The Forgotten German Creole of Papua New Guinea

Deep in the Pacific, there exists a rare German-based creole called Unserdeutsch. It was born in a Catholic boarding school, blending German with local languages to create a unique tongue spoken by a small community.

This language emerged at an orphanage in Rabaul, Papua New Guinea, where children of mixed heritage developed it to communicate. It is the only known German-based creole in the entire world. Today, only a handful of elderly speakers remain, making it an incredibly endangered linguistic treasure. Linguists view it as a fascinating example of how quickly new languages can form in isolated environments.
