Why Destruction Never Boosts The Economy

Breaking a window does not stimulate the economy. While it creates work for the glazier, it forces the shop owner to sacrifice money they would have spent on something new, resulting in a net loss for society.

French economist Frederic Bastiat coined this parable to warn against the fallacy that disasters create wealth. When an object is destroyed, we see the economic activity required to repair it, but we fail to see the growth that would have happened if that money remained in the owner's pocket. Replacing what was already there is merely a repair, not an innovation. True economic progress comes from creating new value, not just fixing damage.
