The Unplanned Star of Woodstock

The Unplanned Star of Woodstock

Richie Havens opened the legendary Woodstock festival simply because he was the only performer who had arrived. His improvised performance became iconic, turning him into a cultural symbol almost by accident.

When traffic gridlock prevented other artists from reaching the stage, organizers begged Havens to start the show. He played for nearly three hours, eventually running out of songs and improvising the classic track Freedom on the spot. Beyond that historic moment, his unique rhythmic guitar style led to a surprisingly diverse career that included voice work for popular children toys. It is fascinating how a simple travel delay launched one of the most memorable sets in music history.
