Astronauts See Flashes Inside Closed Eyes
Astronauts traveling in deep space report seeing mysterious flashes of light even when their eyes are closed. These light shows are caused by cosmic rays striking the retina or stimulating the brain’s visual pathways directly.
During the Apollo moon missions, crew members were baffled by these sudden streaks and dots appearing in total darkness. Scientists believe these are not real photons hitting the eye, but rather high-energy particles physically interacting with the nervous system. It essentially means the brain is being tricked into seeing light where none exists. This phenomenon remains a key area of study for protecting human eyes during long-duration space travel.
