The Mystery of the Antlered Celtic God

Cernunnos is a major deity, yet his name appears in ancient records only once. Despite his iconic image as a powerful, antlered figure, historians know almost nothing about his specific myths or worship.

We recognize him today mainly through the Pillar of the Boatmen, a carved stone monument discovered under Notre Dame in Paris. While he is often depicted with torcs hanging from his horns, we have no surviving stories describing what he actually did or believed. He remains a fascinating silhouette from history, symbolizing nature and the wild in a way that continues to spark modern imagination. Most of his legendary status is actually a reconstruction by later enthusiasts.
