The Physics of Rock Guitar Distortion

Distortion pedals do not just add noise to your music, they are actually wrecking your sound on purpose. These devices deliberately push an audio signal past its limit to create that signature gritty, fuzzy edge.

When a guitar signal exceeds an amplifier’s capacity, it creates clipping, where the smooth sound waves are flattened and transformed into rougher shapes. Pedals trigger this process artificially to mimic the sound of an overdriven tube amplifier. By choosing between overdrive, distortion, or fuzz, players can control exactly how much of the waveform is destroyed. It is a rare example of intentionally damaging a signal to create something more pleasing to the ear.
