During the Cold War, the U.S. and Soviet Union detonated nuclear weapons in space. These high-altitude explosions were so powerful they created artificial auroras and caused electrical damage thousands of miles away.

Between 1958 and 1962, nations tested how space-based nuclear blasts would affect Earth. The radiation from these explosions trapped charged particles in the planet's magnetic field, creating massive, glowing artificial light shows.
