Earth Holds Hidden Biological Dark Matter
Much of the genetic material on our planet remains a complete mystery. Scientists call this biological dark matter because it comes from life forms that are so elusive we have yet to see or identify them.
We often discover this DNA in environmental samples, yet we cannot match it to any known living organism. Some experts suspect this mystery material belongs to a potential fourth domain of life, existing entirely outside of what we already know. Others believe it might simply be strange, non-coding sequences within creatures we have already studied. Regardless of its origin, this invisible library suggests that our current map of life is far from complete.
