The Saints Who Carried Their Heads

In medieval art, certain saints known as cephalophores are depicted holding their own severed heads. These figures are often shown walking away from their executions while cradling their heads in their hands.

These striking images were used to symbolize martyrdom by beheading in a literal and graphic way. Artists faced the peculiar challenge of deciding where to place the saint's halo, often painting it floating in mid-air where the head once sat or having the saint carry it along. Legends frequently claim these martyrs continued to walk or preach even after being decapitated. It remains one of the most haunting and distinct visual motifs in religious history.
