The Ancient Indian Roots of Chess

Chess evolved from an ancient Indian game called chaturanga nearly 1,500 years ago. Unlike the modern version, this early strategy game was designed to simulate the dynamics of an entire battlefield.

Chaturanga pieces represented the four divisions of the Indian army: infantry, cavalry, elephants, and chariots. As the game moved through Persia and the Islamic world, the rules shifted and the pieces were rebranded to fit new cultural contexts. By the time it reached Europe, the pieces transformed into the kings, queens, and bishops we recognize today. It is fascinating that a game played in medieval courts has survived across sixteen centuries of history.
