The Russian Town Named After A Playwright

The Russian town of Chekhov is named in honor of the famous author Anton Chekhov. He lived on a local estate for several years and penned some of his greatest works there.

The town was originally known as Lopasnya but was renamed in 1954 to commemorate the writer. During his time at the Melikhovo estate nearby, Chekhov managed local schools and clinics while writing iconic plays like The Seagull. Today, the estate serves as a popular museum for literature fans. It remains a rare example of a town directly tethered to a literary legacy.
