The Myth of the Unhappy Triad

The Myth of the Unhappy Triad

The famous Unhappy Triad knee injury is often a medical misconception. While doctors long believed it always involved the medial meniscus, actual data shows lateral meniscus tears are far more common in these complex injuries.

For decades, sports medicine textbooks taught that a torn ACL and MCL almost always came with a specific injury to the medial meniscus. When researchers finally analyzed the data in the 1990s, they discovered this was rarely the case. In reality, injuries to the lateral side of the meniscus occur significantly more often during these accidents. This shift in understanding has helped surgeons diagnose and treat knee trauma much more accurately today.
