The Illusion of Controlling Your Addiction

The Illusion of Controlling Your Addiction

Gamblers often suffer from a psychological trap where they firmly believe they can quit their risky habit at any moment. Even while placing bets, they convince themselves they remain in total control of their behavior.

This mindset is known as gambler's conceit, a cognitive bias that shields people from the reality of their dependency. By maintaining the illusion that they could stop if they wanted to, individuals feel empowered rather than trapped. This false sense of agency makes it significantly harder to recognize when a hobby has transformed into a dangerous addiction. It is a classic example of how our minds prioritize comfort over admitting a loss of control.
