A Real Forest Inspired Horror

The 2016 film The Forest is set in the real-life Aokigahara Forest in Japan. This legendary site is infamous for its dense, sound-dampening trees and tragic reputation as a place where people go to vanish.

Filmmakers chose this location because of the unsettling history surrounding the actual woods near Mount Fuji. The forest floor is made of porous volcanic rock, which absorbs sound and creates an eerie sense of isolation. Many local legends speak of spirits trapped among the gnarled, moss-covered trees. This deep sense of unease provided the perfect, chilling backdrop for the movie.
