Song Dynasty Archaeologists Pioneered Modern Science
Long before modern archaeology emerged in the West, Chinese scholars were already systematically cataloging ancient artifacts during the Song dynasty. These 11th-century officials analyzed monuments and relics to reconstruct their nation's deep history.
During the Song dynasty, a movement known as antiquarianism gained massive popularity among the intellectual elite. These scholars did not just collect beautiful objects; they measured them, sketched them, and compared inscriptions to verify historical records. By treating physical ruins as evidence, they laid a scholarly foundation for the study of history that pre-dated similar European efforts by several centuries. Their work proves that the scientific method of inquiry has much older roots than many people realize.
