Macedonia is named after a figure from Greek mythology. Makednos, the son of Zeus and Thyia, was considered the legendary ancestor who gave his name to the entire region.

While history books often focus on the politics of ancient kingdoms, ancient myths provided their own creative explanations for how nations began. Thyia was the granddaughter of Prometheus, linking the Macedonian lineage directly to the creators of humanity. Her union with Zeus produced two sons, Magnes and Makednos, who became the namesakes for distinct Greek groups.
