Why Incompetent People Often Feel Confident

The Dunning-Kruger effect explains why people with the least expertise in a task often rate their skills as high. Conversely, true experts frequently underestimate their own abilities because they assume others find the work just as easy.

This phenomenon occurs because the skills needed to perform a task well are the same skills needed to evaluate that task. When someone lacks knowledge, they also lack the ability to recognize their own mistakes. Meanwhile, high performers often fall into the trap of assuming that because a task feels simple to them, it must be simple for everyone else. It is a humbling reminder that confidence is not always a reliable indicator of actual competence.
