The Scattered Relics of Buddha

After the Buddha was cremated, his followers did not bury him in a single tomb. Instead, they split his physical remains into fragments and distributed them across ancient India to build commemorative shrines.

These sacred remains, known as Sharira, became the foundation for stupas that now span across Asia. By dividing his body, the early followers ensured that his physical presence was not tied to one location. This tradition turned the Buddha's scattered ashes into a symbolic map of his teachings. Today, many of these original sites are considered some of the most significant pilgrimage destinations in the world.
