Iceland Is Ripped In Half

Iceland is physically being torn apart by two tectonic plates. It sits directly on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, meaning the country is slowly widening as North America and Europe drift away from each other.

This geological tug-of-war is the reason for the island's extreme landscape of active volcanoes and steaming geysers. Because the plates are constantly pulling away, new crust is always forming to fill the gap. You can even walk between the two continental plates at Thingvellir National Park. It is one of the few places on Earth where you can see the Earth's inner mechanics exposed right on the surface.
