America's Pioneering Teacher Training University

Eastern Michigan University began in 1849 as the country's first teacher training school established outside of New England. It later shattered academic norms by becoming the first institution to offer a four-year degree for educators.

Long before it became a research university, it was known as the Michigan State Normal School.
