Metals That Vanish From Within
Some alloys can spontaneously lose their strength because one of their internal metals literally dissolves away. This creates a porous, brittle structure even though the object still looks solid from the outside.
This process, known as dealloying, happens when a microscopic chemical reaction targets specific metals inside a mixture. For example, common brass can turn into a weak, spongy mass of copper because the zinc is slowly eaten away from the inside out. It is a sneaky type of corrosion that often hides beneath a perfectly normal surface appearance. Engineers have to be careful, as this hidden decay can lead to sudden, catastrophic failures in pipes or structural components.
