Animals That Voluntarily Shed Their Limbs

Some animals survive by intentionally severing their own limbs to escape a predator. This extreme survival strategy, called autotomy, allows them to leave a twitching body part behind as a distraction while they flee to safety.

When threatened, creatures like certain lizards and crabs can trigger a clean break in their own anatomy to detach a tail or leg. Many of these animals possess the incredible ability to regrow the lost part over time. Scientists have discovered that this specialized self-defense mechanism actually evolved independently across at least nine different branches of the animal kingdom. It is a harsh but highly effective way to trade a limb for a second chance at life.
