Michael Crichton wrote Eaters of the Dead to win a bet that he could make a boring academic text feel like a blockbuster thriller. He disguised the novel as an authentic translation of a real 10th-century manuscript.

To trick readers, Crichton added scholarly footnotes and an academic introduction to his story about Vikings. Many readers were fooled by the formal tone and actually believed the book was a genuine historical document. It cleverly reimagines the classic epic Beowulf through the eyes of a real historical figure named Ibn Fadlan. This unique approach turned a dry literary challenge into a bestselling adventure.
