Ancient Rome Had No Concept of Sexual Orientation

Ancient Romans did not define people by who they loved. Instead, they categorized sexual behavior based strictly on whether a person played a dominant, masculine role or a submissive, feminine one.

Roman society focused on power dynamics rather than the gender of a partner. A freeborn man was expected to hold the dominant position in any sexual encounter to maintain his social status. Adopting a passive role was considered a loss of masculine dignity, regardless of the gender of the person he was with. Because of this, the modern labels of gay or straight simply did not exist in their cultural framework.
