The Digital Doomsday of 2038

On January 19, 2038, many older computer systems will experience a glitch that resets their internal clocks. They will suddenly believe it is the year 1901 instead of 2038, potentially causing widespread system failures.

This happens because these computers store time as a count of seconds starting from 1970 using a 32-bit format. Once that counter reaches its maximum limit in 2038, it overflows and wraps back to a negative value. While most modern devices have updated to 64-bit systems to avoid this, older industrial equipment and embedded hardware remain at risk. It is essentially the modern version of the Y2K bug, lurking in the background of our infrastructure.
